Meşrutiyet ile Cumhuriyet’in ilk yılları arasında faaliyet gösteren edebiyat akımıdır.	It is a literary movement active between the Constitutional Monarchy and the early years of the Republic.
Genellikle Ali Canip Yöntem, Ömer Seyfettin ve Ziya Gökalp'in Genç Kalemler dergisinde savundukları Yeni Lisan Hareketi ile başlatılır.	It is usually initiated with the New Language Movement advocated by Ali Canip Yöntem, Ömer Seyfettin and Ziya Gökalp in the journal Genç Kalemler.
Dilde sadeleşme, şiirde aruzun yerine hece vezni, içerikte halkın sorunları ve yerli yaşam Millî Edebiyat Döneminin temelini oluşturur.	Simplification in language, syllabic meter instead of aruz in poetry, people's problems and local life in content form the basis of the National Literature Period.
Bu dönemde Türk edebiyatı Doğu ve Batı taklitçiliğinden kurtarılmaya çalışılmış, yalın bir anlatım benimsenmiştir.	In this period, Turkish literature was tried to be saved from imitation of East and West, and a simple expression was adopted.

yüzyıl Türk edebiyatında en çok bahsi geçen bir akım olmakla beraber belli kuruluş zamanı ve beyannamesi bulunmadığı, hatta mensuplarını tek bir grup olarak düşünmek kolay olmadığı için millî edebiyatın ne olduğu hususunda tartışmalar daha o zamanlar başlamış, Cumhuriyet’ten sonraki yıllarda da devam etmiştir.
