恣意性	Arbitrariness
ソシュールは、「能記」(signifiant)と「所記」（signifié）という2つの概念（シニフィアンとシニフィエ）を用いて、言語記号の音声・形態とその意味との間には必然的な関係性はないという言語記号の恣意性を説いた。	Saussure explained that in using the two concepts of signifiant (signifier) and signifie (signified), the sound/form of a linguistic sign and its meaning don't have an inevitable relationship.
これとはほぼ反対の立場として音象徴（sound symbolism）という見解がある。	There is a point of view almost opposite to this known as sound symbolism.
これは、音素そのものに何らかの意味や感覚、印象といったものがあり、言語記号はその組み合わせによって合理的に作られているとするものである。	This is that phonemes themselves have some kind of meaning, sense, or impression and based on how they are paired with linguistic signs there is a logically produced outcome.
