恣意性	Arbitrariness
ソシュールは、「能記」(signifiant)と「所記」（signifié）という2つの概念（シニフィアンとシニフィエ）を用いて、言語記号の音声・形態とその意味との間には必然的な関係性はないという言語記号の恣意性を説いた。	Saussure used the two concepts of signifier (signifiant) and signified (signifié) to explain the arbitrariness of linguistic signs, where the sound or form of a linguistic sign is not necessarily tied to its meaning.
これとはほぼ反対の立場として音象徴（sound symbolism）という見解がある。	Almost diametrically opposed to this position is the notion of sound symbolism.
これは、音素そのものに何らかの意味や感覚、印象といったものがあり、言語記号はその組み合わせによって合理的に作られているとするものである。	Sound symbolism posits that phonemes themselves bear some kind of meaning, feeling, or impression, and that linguistic symbols are rationally created by combining them.
しかし、実際にはどの言語にも普遍的な音象徴というものは存在しないため、現在そのような立場の言語研究はあまり行われていない。	However, since no language presents a universal sound symbolism, there is not much linguistic research being done from this standpoint.
