The house—it was too small to be called a palace—sat at the top of a hill, overlooking thick woods and a river.	La casa, troppo piccola per definirla un palazzo, stava in cima alla collina, e sovrastava boschi fitti e un fiume.
At a distance, it appeared to be the same as when Mamma was a girl: stately, welcoming, a place of parties and balls, where visitors came to spend long weeks, where Mamma and Papa had danced until dawn the night of their wedding.	A distanza, sembrava la stessa di quando mamma era ragazza: maestosa, accogliente, un posto dove tenere feste e balli, dove gli ospiti andavano a trascorrere lunghe settimane, dove mamma e papà avevano danzato fino all’alba il giorno del loro matrimonio.
But once a traveler drew near, changes appeared.	Ma quando si arrivava più vicini, si vedevano le differenze: buchi che si spalancavano nel tetto, alcune finestre senza vetri, la maggior parte anche senza tende.
The few remaining shutters dangled unevenly and banged when a high wind blew.	Le poche ante rimaste pendevano in maniera irregolare e sbattevano quando soffiava un vento forte.
